Kuala Lumpur — one of Southeast Asia's most liveable capitals for remote workers

What Is the DE Rantau Visa?

The DE Rantau (Digital Economy Rantau) visa is Malaysia's official digital nomad visa, introduced under the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). It allows qualified foreign digital workers and tech freelancers to live in Malaysia and work remotely for clients outside the country.

'Rantau' is a Malay word meaning 'to roam' — an intentional choice that signals Malaysia's openness to location-independent workers. The visa grants a 12-month stay, renewable annually, and explicitly permits remote work for overseas employers and clients.

Malaysia is one of the few countries in Southeast Asia with a purpose-built digital nomad visa backed by a government agency. That legal clarity — combined with English-language infrastructure, strong healthcare, and one of the most cost-effective capital cities in the region — makes it a credible long-term base for remote workers.

Who can apply for Malaysia DE Rantau digital nomad pass

Who Can Apply?

The DE Rantau visa is open to foreign nationals working in eligible digital sectors. The income threshold and sector requirements are the two key filters.

Income requirement: You must earn a minimum of USD 24,000 per year (approximately USD 2,000 per month) from sources outside Malaysia. Freelancers must demonstrate this through contracts, invoices, or income statements. Employed workers must show payslips or employment contracts.

Eligible sectors: The visa targets tech workers, software developers, IT professionals, and digital marketing specialists. Content creators, designers, and e-commerce operators may also qualify depending on their scope of work. MDEC evaluates applications case by case.

Clean background: A police clearance certificate from your home country (or country of residence for the past 12 months) is required. Criminal records disqualify applicants.

Health insurance: You must hold valid health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay. This is a mandatory condition, not optional.

How to apply for Malaysia DE Rantau step by step

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Check eligibility. Confirm your income meets USD 24,000/year and your work falls within an eligible digital sector. When in doubt, contact MDEC directly before paying the fee.
  2. Gather documents. Prepare your income proof, police clearance, health insurance documents, and passport scans. A clear, complete application moves faster.
  3. Apply via the MDEC portal. Create an account at the official DE Rantau application portal and complete the online form. Upload all required documents and pay the MYR 1,060 fee.
  4. Wait for MDEC review. MDEC reviews your application and may request additional documents. Processing typically takes 3–4 weeks for a complete application.
  5. Receive approval letter. Upon approval, you receive a DE Rantau approval letter. You then apply for the corresponding visa at the nearest Malaysian embassy or consulate in your country.
  6. Collect your visa and travel. Once the entry visa is stamped in your passport, you can enter Malaysia. You must register with MDEC within 7 days of arrival.
  7. Renew annually. The visa is renewable each year as long as you continue to meet the income and sector requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work for Malaysian clients on the DE Rantau visa?
No. The DE Rantau visa covers remote work for clients or employers based outside Malaysia only. Providing services to Malaysian-based clients requires a different work authorisation.
Can my family join me in Malaysia on this visa?
The visa covers the primary applicant only. Dependants can apply for a separate DE Rantau dependent pass, each with its own fees and requirements. Check current MDEC guidelines for availability.
Does the DE Rantau visa trigger tax residency?
Spending 182 or more days in Malaysia in a calendar year makes you a tax resident. Remote income from overseas clients is generally treated differently, but get advice from a Malaysian tax professional before assuming your income is exempt.
What happens if I travel outside Malaysia during the visa period?
You can leave and re-enter freely during the 12-month validity. Each stay must not exceed 90 days. There is no minimum stay requirement.
How does DE Rantau compare to Thailand DTV?
DE Rantau is a 12-month renewable visa with a clear income threshold and explicit remote work permission. Thailand DTV is a 5-year multi-entry visa with no stated income requirement but longer processing. Thailand gives more flexibility on stays; Malaysia gives more legal clarity on remote work status.

Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H)

MM2H is a long-stay renewable visa that grants a 10-year multiple-entry pass to qualifying applicants. Holders must spend a minimum of 90 days per year in Malaysia to maintain eligibility.

The programme has three tiers — Platinum, Gold, and Silver — each with different offshore income and fixed deposit requirements.
