The DE Rantau (Digital Economy Rantau) visa is Malaysia's official digital nomad visa, introduced under the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). It allows qualified foreign digital workers and tech freelancers to live in Malaysia and work remotely for clients outside the country.
'Rantau' is a Malay word meaning 'to roam' — an intentional choice that signals Malaysia's openness to location-independent workers. The visa grants a 12-month stay, renewable annually, and explicitly permits remote work for overseas employers and clients.
Malaysia is one of the few countries in Southeast Asia with a purpose-built digital nomad visa backed by a government agency. That legal clarity — combined with English-language infrastructure, strong healthcare, and one of the most cost-effective capital cities in the region — makes it a credible long-term base for remote workers.

The DE Rantau visa is open to foreign nationals working in eligible digital sectors. The income threshold and sector requirements are the two key filters.
Income requirement: You must earn a minimum of USD 24,000 per year (approximately USD 2,000 per month) from sources outside Malaysia. Freelancers must demonstrate this through contracts, invoices, or income statements. Employed workers must show payslips or employment contracts.
Eligible sectors: The visa targets tech workers, software developers, IT professionals, and digital marketing specialists. Content creators, designers, and e-commerce operators may also qualify depending on their scope of work. MDEC evaluates applications case by case.
Clean background: A police clearance certificate from your home country (or country of residence for the past 12 months) is required. Criminal records disqualify applicants.
Health insurance: You must hold valid health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay. This is a mandatory condition, not optional.

Valid passport — at least 14 months remaining validity (12 months for the visa plus a safety buffer).
Proof of income — bank statements (last 3 months), employment contracts, freelance invoices, or payslips demonstrating USD 24,000/year from non-Malaysian sources.
Completed DE Rantau application form — submitted via the official MDEC portal.
Professional resume or CV — showing your work history and relevance to eligible digital economy sectors.
Passport-sized photograph — recent, with white background, meeting standard biometric photo requirements.
Police clearance certificate — from your home country or most recent country of residence. Must be issued within the last 6 months at time of application.
Valid health insurance — proof of coverage for the full visa duration. An international policy with Malaysian coverage is acceptable.
Application fee of MYR 1,060 — payable online during the application process (non-refundable).

MM2H is a long-stay renewable visa that grants a 10-year multiple-entry pass to qualifying applicants. Holders must spend a minimum of 90 days per year in Malaysia to maintain eligibility.
