What is the Destination Thailand Visa?

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is Thailand’s dedicated long-stay visa for remote workers, freelancers, consultants, and digital nomads. Launched in 2024, it gives you a legitimate right to reside in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry, with unlimited re-entries over five years. Your income must come from outside Thailand — it does not authorise working for Thai clients or employers.

Who Qualifies for the DTV?

Who qualifies for the Destination Thailand Visa DTV

The DTV is open to nationals of most countries with income from outside Thailand. Qualifying categories include remote employees working for foreign companies, freelancers and independent contractors with verifiable client income, business owners of companies registered outside Thailand, digital content creators with documented platform income, and investors with verifiable passive income from foreign assets. Embassies informally expect evidence of at least USD 40,000 per year and six months of bank statements.

How to Apply: Step by Step

1
Find Your Nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate
The DTV is an embassy visa — you apply in person at a Thai diplomatic post in your home country or country of residence. Use the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs directory to locate the nearest post.
🔍
2
Download the Embassy's Local Checklist
Each embassy may have additional or slightly different requirements. Download and follow their specific checklist — not just the general DTV requirements list.
📋
3
Prepare Your Documents
Gather everything on the checklist: passport, photos, income proof, bank statements, health insurance, accommodation, and travel booking. Translate any non-English documents into English or Thai.
📂
4
Submit in Person at the Embassy
Most Thai embassies require in-person submission. Book an appointment in advance if required. Bring both originals and copies of all documents.
🏗️
5
Pay the Visa Fee — THB 10,000
Pay the government fee at submission. The fee is THB 10,000 (~USD 280), typically collected in local equivalent currency. Payment is usually cash — confirm with your embassy beforehand.
💳
6
Wait for Processing
Typical processing time is 15–45 working days (~3–9 weeks). Processing time varies by embassy and season. Do not book non-refundable flights until your passport is returned with the visa.
⏳
7
Collect Your Passport & Travel
Collect your passport with the DTV sticker. Each entry into Thailand stamps a 180-day stay. The visa is valid for 5 years and multiple entries — exit and re-enter to reset your 180-day clock.
✈️
💡
DTV validity: 5 years, multiple entry. Each entry: 180 days. Cannot be applied for inside Thailand. Cannot be extended from within Thailand — you must exit and re-enter to reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend the DTV inside Thailand?
No. You must exit and re-enter Thailand to reset your 180-day stay. Re-entry is unlimited during the 5-year visa validity — so exit, cross a border, and come straight back.
Can I work for Thai clients on the DTV?
No. The DTV authorises remote work for foreign employers or clients only. Working for Thai companies or clients requires a Thai work permit, which is a separate and more demanding process.
Do I pay Thai taxes on the DTV?
Thai tax residency is triggered at 180 or more days of physical presence per calendar year. If you exceed that threshold, consult a qualified Thai tax professional for your specific situation — rules on foreign-sourced income have been updated recently.
Is the DTV the same as the Thailand LTR Visa?
No. The Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa targets high-net-worth individuals and typically requires a minimum annual income of USD 80,000 or more. The DTV is designed for the broader remote worker and digital nomad community with more accessible thresholds.
Can my family join me on a DTV?
Each family member must apply for their own visa. Spouses and dependent children typically apply for a Tourist Visa or Non-Immigrant O Visa — not the DTV, which is individual only.
